Reliability and Validity of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Scoring System for the Upper Extremity in Japanese Patients

Abstract: We can conclude that the MSTS is not an adequate measure of general health-related quality of life; however, this system was designed mainly to be a simple measure of function in a single extremity. To evaluate the mental state of patients with musculoskeletal tumors in the upper extremity, further study is needed.

“…16 This is likely due to its ease of use and the fact that MSTS is generally considered to be an acceptable evaluation system for patient-centered outcomes in the setting of musculoskeletal oncologic surgery and limb salvage in general. 3,[84][85][86] However, MSTS has been found to overestimate function compared to the patient's perceived score. 87 Another measure of patient-centered outcomes is the disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) score.…”

“…The MSTS score was the most commonly reported standardized metric used by the studies included in this systematic review . This is likely due to its ease of use and the fact that MSTS is generally considered to be an acceptable evaluation system for patient‐centered outcomes in the setting of musculoskeletal oncologic surgery and limb salvage in general . However, MSTS has been found to overestimate function compared to the patient's perceived score .…”

“…These results indicate that the ER muscle strength and endurance were functionally maintained. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score [ 6 ] was 21; Constant score, 71; and University of California at Los Angeles shoulder score, 29. We found no evidence of metastasis at the last follow-up.…”

“…In patients with STS or bone sarcoma of the upper or lower extremity who undergo tumor resection and/or amputation procedures, preserving the function of the affected limb is of outmost importance since it significantly affects the patient’s quality of life [ 11 , 12 ]. With the rapid increase of multi-cultural research projects, the need for the development of methodologies to facilitate the cross-cultural adaptation of health status questionnaires was imminent [ 13 ].…”
