Objective The aim of this study was to develop and validate Chinese versions of the International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire for Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (ICIQ‐MLUTS) and ICIQ‐MLUTS Long Form (LF), and to discuss their potential functions. Methods The original ICIQ‐MLUTS and ICIQ‐MLUTS LF were translated into Chinese after obtaining permission from the International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire Advisory Board. Between November 2017 and August 2018, the Chinese versions of the ICIQ‐MLUTS and ICIQ‐MLUTS LF were validated by administering them to male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms attending the urology department in 6 and 12 hospitals, respectively, in China. Results In all, 135 and 230 patients completed the first administration of the Chinese version of the ICIQ‐MLUTS and ICIQ‐MLUTS LF, respectively. Both questionnaires had good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.797 and 0.853 for the ICIQ‐MLUTS and ICIQ‐MLUTS LF, respectively) and good criterion validity (Pearson's correlation of 0.846 and 0.833 with the International Prostate Symptom Score for the ICIQ‐MLUTS and ICIQ‐MLUTS LF, respectively). Satisfactory test–retest reliability was demonstrated, with an intraclass correlation coefficient for both questionnaires >0.9. Good responsiveness of both questionnaires was also noticeable (marked improvements between scores before and after treatment; P < 0.001 for both). Conclusions The Chinese versions of the ICIQ‐MLUTS and ICIQ‐MLUTS LF were valid and reliable in Chinese population, which will be useful for clinical practice and research in China.

What is the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) among public hospitals staff and association with shift working? The aim of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence and bothersomeness of LUTS and the impact of shift working on its symptoms among the staff of public hospitals. Job condition is one of the main risk factors for LUTS, and almost about three-quarters of nurses/nursing assistants do not have time to use the toilet during the shift work. Non-standard shiftwork intensely is associated with various urological complications. Our study reveals new insights on the prevalence of LUTS with more frequency in women shift workers when compared with men. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional survey from October 2019 to January 2020. The data were collected from three public hospitals.A total of 228 individuals, 148 females (64.9%), and 80 males (35.1%) were enrolled in the study. After considering the inclusion criteria, for women, the validated version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire for Female Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (ICIQ-FLUTS) and for men, the validated version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire for Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Module (ICIQ-MLUTS) were used. LUTS was more prevalent in women (61.1% vs. 44.2%, p = 0.016). In both men and women, the most bothersome symptom was urgency and the most prevalent symptom was nocturia (58.9%, and 43.9%, respectively). A significant relationship was observed between LUTS and shift working in female staff (p = 0.037). Nocturia was found to be the most prevalent symptom in both genders. The highest bothersome issue in men was related to urgency, and in women in addition to urgency, nocturia was another common symptom. However, the bother scores of most symptoms relatively were low. Although the percentage of women with shift working was low the prevalence of LUTS was high in this gender.

AbstractTraditional open surgical technique for rectal cancer is associated with significant morbidity and impact on quality of life. Multiple structures are at risk during total mesorectal excision, which may have profound impact on sexual function, and urinary and fecal continence. In addition, having a temporary or permanent ostomy can have a significant effect on overall well-being. Patients have reported post-operative problems such as chronic wounds, poor body image, inhibited work and social function. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is an evolving component of colon and rectal cancer treatment that may have benefits over open surgery. The increasing role of laparoscopy for colon and rectal cancer has been associated with decreased morbidity, improved pain control, and reduced length of stay. However, laparoscopic surgery in rectal cancer remains technically difficult due to the inherent limitations of operating in the pelvis. Robotic surgery is a newer method for treating rectal cancer developed to overcome these limitations. Transanal endoscopic microsurgery and transanal MIS are techniques to achieve local excision, avoiding proctectomy in select patients, potentially improving functional outcomes. Transanal total mesorectal excision is an even newer technique to facilitate dissection of low rectal cancers. Controversy remains about equivalence in oncologic outcomes when these MIS approaches are used for rectal cancer. Even more unclear is the effect of MIS approaches on quality of life and how they compare to open surgery. This review discusses the most current evidence on the impact of various MIS techniques on quality of life after rectal cancer surgery.
