Reliability and validity of the functioning assessment short test for older adults with bipolar disorder (FAST-O)

Abstract: Background Many frequently used instruments fail to assess psychosocial functioning in patients with bipolar disorder. The Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) was developed in order to tackle this problem and to assess the main functioning problems experienced by patients with bipolar disorder. However, the original FAST is not fully applicable in older adults due to the domain of occupational functioning. The aim of our study was to validate an adapted version for Older adults (FAST-O) in a group of olde… Show more

“…Regarding functionality, several tools to assess the functionality of bipolar patients have been used until now, the FAST test being one of them. This test was validated in different populations and at different ages, showing consistent results in BD patients 19,20 . The FAST scores are evaluated through six functional domains: Autonomy; Occupational Functioning; Cognitive Functioning; Financial Issues; Interpersonal Relationships and Leisure Time, where higher scores indicate worse performance, and the total score of the test is calculated by adding the scores of the six subtests (maximum score = 72).…”

“…Second, the societal functioning domain of the Functional Assessment Short Test (FAST) was used as additional measurement of social functioning. The FAST was originally developed to assess the main problems in functioning experienced by psychiatric patients, particularly BD patients, and was recently validated for older adults with BD 42 . The FAST is an interviewer‐administered instrument, and is designed to be conducted by a trained clinician.…”

“… 7 , 9 , 10 This suggests that model B as currently operationalized may be less suitable for OABD. Future studies should explore other measurements for inter‐episodic functioning for staging with model B in OABD, such as the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST‐O 31 ) which has already been validated in OABD patients.…”
