Reliability and validity of severity dimensions of psychopathology assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM‐5 (SCID)

Abstract: This study examined whether the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM (SCID), a widely used semistructured interview designed to assess psychopathology categorically, can be adapted to identify reliable and valid severity dimensions of psychopathology. The present study also examined whether these severity dimensions have better psychometric properties (internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent and predictive validity) than categorical diagnoses. Participants (N = 234) were recruited from t… Show more

“…All of the interview modules were administered during the initial evaluation to assess the exclusion criteria, while the post-intervention evaluation used only the module corresponding to depressive disorders. Among its psychometric properties is a Cronbach's alpha of > 0.80 for all disorders [41].…”

“…There were no diagnosis-based inclusion criteria; however, participants were required to be between the ages of 18 and 30 and have at least one full biological sibling who was eligible to participate. More detailed information regarding the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria and procedures is available elsewhere (Shankman et al, 2018). To avoid non-independence of observations due to the presence of sibling pairs, we randomly assigned one sibling from each sibling pair to community sample 1 and assigned the other sibling to community sample 2.…”

“…This may require substantial modifications to interview measures and longer interviewing times, but will allow researchers to quantify dimensions and assess their hierarchical organization, neither of which is advisable for variables affected by exclusion rules, as these rules usually introduce serious distortions in the data (Kotov, Ruggero, Krueger, Watson, & Zimmerman, 2018). Moreover, skip-out free psychopathology severity dimensions have shown superior validity and reliability over categorical diagnoses derived from the same interview (Shankman et al, 2018).…”
