Reliability and validity of self-reported physical activity in the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study — HUNT 1

Abstract: Our results indicate that the PA questionnaire in HUNT 1 is reproducible and provides a useful measure of leisure-time PA for men. The questionnaire is very short, and compared favourably with much longer instruments for assessment of more vigorous PA. It should be an appropriate tool for use in further epidemiological studies, particularly when the interest is in aspects of PA reflected in fitness or METs greater than 6.

“…By use of questionnaire, subjects may overestimate their activity levels (52). However, the HUNT questionnaires have been validated and associated with physical fitness (36)(37)(38). Also, it seems likely that any measurement error in the assessment of LTPA should not depend on menstrual status 10 years later and would often tend to bias results toward the null.…”

“…The LTPA questions have been validated for men with good test-retest reliability and validity (36,37) and partly in a small sample of women (38) where a positive association was found between reported intensity and oxygen uptake during exercise.…”

“…The questions were similar to those used in The HUNT study, which is a longitudinal population health study in Norway 29. There are five alternatives for reporting frequency of exercise from “never” to “almost every day.” There are three alternatives for intensity from “I take it easy without breaking into a sweat or losing my breath” to “I push myself to near exhaustion,” and four response alternatives for duration of each exercise session from “<15 min” to “[mt]1 h.” These questions have been validated 29. Feedback from patients have shown that one of the new statements was difficult to understand (I feel/notice pain).…”

“…When patients came to their 5-year follow-up visit, they filled out a validated self-reported physical activity questionnaire (77), and their current daily physical activity was also measured. The physical activity was measured by activity frequency and intensity, monitored with SenseWear armband monitors (BodyMedia Inc, Pittsburgh, USA) worn for one week (approximately 23h/day).…”
