Reliability and validity of last menstrual period for gestational age estimation in a low‐to‐middle‐income setting

Abstract: In the absence of ultrasound, LMP is a reliable alternative for gestational age dating during early pregnancy. However, it is not sensitive in identifying late- and post-term pregnancies and should not be relied upon to make clinical decisions regarding elective cesarean section or induction of labor for supposed prolonged pregnancies.

“…One of the rare studies focusing on pregnancy outcomes in eastern DRC pointed to a two-fold increase in the rate of preterm births in a hospital following the eruption of the 1997 war in the now Ituri province [35], consistent with the literature from other conflict-plagued contexts [36]. Inaccurate estimation of gestational age, mostly based on clinical evaluations and last menstrual periods is possible [37], though the latter was suggested to be a reliable alternative for the assessment of gestational age in low-income settings where early pregnancy ultrasound is not readily accessible [38].…”

“…Gestational age at each visit was calculated using the gestational age determined by the dating scan. 22 Abdominal circumference, biparietal diameter, head circumference, and femur length were recorded at each follow-up scan. This methodology was performed as per the INTERGROWTH-21 st study international standards for measuring fetal growth.…”

“…The retrieval of gestational age was a crucial aspect of the search strategy; however, few studies documented the method used. There are large differences in the accuracy of different techniques ( 123 ).…”
