Reliability and Validity of a New Objective Tool for Low Back Pain Functional Assessment

Abstract: It is possible to distinguish LBP patients from healthy subjects by means of the biomechanical analysis of everyday tasks. This kind of analysis can produce objective and reliable indexes about the patients' degree of functional impairment.

“…Pain level and disability were assessed using the VAS and ODI. 3 The Sorensen test is used as method for testing isometric back endurance; it measures how long the subject can maximally maintain the unsupported trunk horizontally while lying prone with a fixed pelvis and, knees and ankles held by straps on a test table (Figure 1). 8,9 The FMS includes seven tasks: a deep squat, hurdle step (right and left), active straight leg raise (right and left), rotary stability (right and left), inline lunge (right and left), push up, and shoulder mobility (right and left) ( Figure 2).…”

“…About 4-33% of the population suffers LBP, and its lifetime prevalence is 58-84%. Its annual incidence has been estimated in 28 episodes per 1000 persons, with the highest incidence in prime-aged workers (aged 25-64 years) [2]. It is the first cause of work loss and absenteeism [3].…”

“…LBP causes restrictions in physical functioning which may affect the quality of life of individuals [2,[4][5][6]. Physical functioning is a multi dimensional construct covering various aspects of health such as perceived physical functioning, actual physical activity and functional capacity to perform activities [7][8][9].…”

“…A number of predominantly psychosocial variables [68, 11, 17, 18] have been shown to have a relationship with poor outcome and/or work loss in chronic back pain. The majority of such studies however exclude analysis or findings that allow useful application of results to clinical practice.…”
