Reliability and Validity of a Self-Report FIM??? (FIM-SR) in Persons with Amputation or Spinal Cord Injury and Chronic Pain

Abstract: The FIM-SR motor scales and total FIM-SR score are reliable and valid measures of perceived functional independence in individuals with SCI. However, all of the FIM-SR scales in the amputation sample, and the FIM-SR cognitive scales in the SCI sample, seem to be less useful measures of functioning due to subjects reporting high levels of independence. The FIM-SR should be retested in amputation samples with more variable levels of functioning.

“…The validity and reliability of telephone administration of the mFIM with people with SCI has been established. 12 Participation restrictions were assessed using the community integration measure (CIM), a 10-item, client-centred measure that assesses words of participants with respect to personal attitudes, perceptions and beliefs regarding their connection with their community. A single summary score (between 10 and 50) is derived.…”

“…Patients want to become self-aware and take responsibility for problem solving [18] and self-assessment of function will help them in this direction. The fairly recently developed FIM selfreport measure provides a measure of perceived functional independence [56]. Although SCIM III, as used here, is not a new self-reported measure but an adaptation of a current measure, it is the first attempt to present the person's living with SCI perspective while using a SCI-specific measure.…”

“…12 FIM presents valid and reliable test in the estimation of aggregated changes in functional status that appears in the defined period of the study evaluation. [13][14][15] It is composed of 18 categories that are scaled from 1-7 each. 13 For the estimation of comorbidity of participants we used Cumulative Illness rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRS-G), and findings were presented as severity index (SI), where SI was calculated as total CIRS-G score divided by the number of endorsed categories.…”
