Reliability and Validity of 2 Self-Report Measures to Assess Sedentary Behavior in Older Adults

Abstract: Background The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of two currently available physical activity surveys for assessing time spent in sedentary behavior (SB) in older adults. Methods Fifty-eight adults (≥65 years) completed the Yale Physical Activity Survey for Older Adults (YPAS) and Community Health Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS) before and after a 10-day period during which they wore an ActiGraph accelerometer (ACC). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) exam… Show more

“…Four of the studies were conducted in Europe,19–22 three in Australia,23–25 one in the USA26 and one in Brazil 27. Cultural norms could influence perceptions of ‘sedentary behaviour’ and should be considered in research using self-report.…”

“…The Physical Activity Survey for Older Adults and the Community Health Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS) are widely used tools but both questionnaires were found to underestimate ST when compared with accelerometer data (ActiGraph). The CHAMPS questionnaire (n=58) underestimated ST by 5.21 hours/day 26. The Human Activity Profile Questionnaire includes 94 activities that have variable energy requirements (low to high); it had a strong correlation (−0.47) with accelerometer (ActiGraph) measured ST (n=120) 27.…”

“…It should also be added that taking Harada, Chiu, King, Stewart's (ibid.) caloric expenditure as reference, this factor could be qualified as sedentary 10 , and it has been claimed that CHAMPS is not the most appropriate resource to assess sedentary behavior 15,25 , or even to estimate the amount of PA performed in populations where low-intensity activity is predominant 26 . However, the CHAMPS questionnaire proved to be an invalid tool to estimate the amount of PA performed in institutionalized populations with cognitive deterioration in this study.…”

“…One promising possibility is the Yale Physical Activity Survey (YPAS) sitting score, which correlated with accelerometer-derived sedentary behavior in older adults. 10 The YPAS has been validated to measure physical activity in persons with RA, 11 but its validity to measure sedentary time in RA is yet to be examined. The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of the YPAS as a measure of subjective sedentary time compared with objective accelerometer-derived sedentary time in individuals with RA.…”
