Reliability and Maintenance Analysis of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Abstract: This paper focuses on the development of a new logistic approach based on reliability and maintenance assessment, with the final aim of establishing a more efficient interval for the maintenance activities for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). In the first part, we develop an architectural philosophy to obtain a more detailed reliability evaluation; then, we study the intrinsic reliability at the design stage in order to avoid severe critical issues in the UAV. In the second part, we compare different maintenanc… Show more

“…An increase in thruster revolutions per minute (RPM), resulting in a faster thruster speed, will likely increase maintenance for each glider due to reducing the reliability factor for the mechanical components on the thruster 51,52 . Reduced reliability means that the mean time between repair (MTBR) for a wave glider thruster will decrease requiring more time out of water for each wave glider throughout the life cycle 53 . A maintainer's goal is to have fewer maintenance periods over the life cycle to reduce downtime and overall maintenance efforts.…”

“…It manages failsafe, autopilot, waypoints, and many other autonomous functions. This microcontroller interprets input from the receiver, global positioning system (GPS) module, battery monitor, inertial measurement unit (IMU) that include an accelerometer and a gyroscope which can be used for providing stability or maintain a reference direction in navigation system [25], and other onboard sensors. The GCS provides relevant data about the vehicle such as speed, attitude, altitude, location, yaw, pitch, roll, warnings, and other information [26].…”

“…UAV platforms can be further distinguished as fixed-wing types, which allow monitoring of large areas from medium–high altitudes, and rotary-wing types, which allow observation of less extensive areas from medium–low altitudes. In recent years, the application of UAVs in precision agriculture as well as in many other fields is becoming more and more common, requiring test systems able to guarantee and certify both electrical and mechanical performance aspects of their propulsion subsystems [ 46 , 47 , 48 ].…”
