Reliability and availability of the Internet of things

Abstract: The problem of reliability and availability of the Internet of Things (IoT) from the point of view of the classical approach of reliability assessment using MIL-HDBK 217 is discussed in this paper. With the classical approach of reliability assessment using MIL-HDBK 217, only hardware reliability can be assessed, and the situation with the IoT is more complicated: billions of different things (devices), software programs, and human users are involved (networked). The reliability and availability of the IoT is … Show more

“…In the following, we have discussed the above for each requirement, namely reliability, resilience, and personalization, in order below. 1) Reliability: Reliability is the probability of a component or a system reaching specific performance standards and producing the desired output in certain environmental conditions for a specific time dura-tion [62]. In other words for IoT devices, reliability can be defined by considering the following three requirements [63].…”

“…'IoT is defined as "Things having identities and virtual personalities operating in smart spaces using intelligent interfaces to connect and communicate within social, environmental, and user contexts" (Atzori, Iera, & Morabito, 2010). The applications related to the Internet of Things (IoT) concept are systems that utilize interconnected computer devices and data processing systems that use digital sensors to transfer data over an Internet network without requiring human intervention (Pokorni, 2019). The IoT environment is basically a collection of devices that are connected together like sensors or mobile phones.…”

“…Para [Pokorni 2019], o termo "confiabilidade" pode ser definido como a probabilidade de um determinado componente ou sistema satisfazer requisitos e padrões de desempenho, quando produz saídas corretas durante um determinado período de tempo. Nesse ponto de vista, a confiabilidade busca alcanc ¸ar a qualidade do sistema, buscando evitar, através de prevenc ¸ão ou tolerância, que acontec ¸am falhas ou erros no sistema.…”
