Abstract. A major part of the commercial Internet is moving towards a cloud paradigm. This phenomenon has a drastic impact on the organizational structures of enterprises and introduces new challenges that must be properly addressed to avoid major setbacks. One such challenge is that of cloud provider viability, that is, the reasonable certainty that the Cloud Service Provider (CSP) will not go out of business, either by filing for bankruptcy or by simply shutting down operations, thus leaving its customers stranded without an infrastructure and, depending on the type of cloud service used, even without their applications or data. This article attempts to address the issue of cloud provider viability, proposing some ways of mitigating the problem both from a technical and from a legal perspective.

Measurability is a concept in periodic static scaling based on the following two conditions: (a) a cloud service provider should be cautious, that is, should not exclude any cloud consumer's resource pooling pattern strategy from consideration; and (b) a cloud service provider should consider the cloud consumers' resource pooling pattern preferences, that is, should deem a cloud consumer's resource pooling pattern strategy k i infinitely more likely than k' i if it premises the cloud consumer to prefer k i to k' i . A resource pooling pattern strategy is measurable if it can optimally be chosen under common resource pooling pattern conjecture in the events (a) and (b). In this paper we present an algorithm that for every finite periodic static scaling operation computes the set of all measurable resource pooling pattern strategies. The algorithm is based on the new idea of an Once-in-aLifetime Workload preference limitation, which is a pair (k i , V i ) consisting of a resource pooling pattern strategy k i , and a subset of resource pooling pattern strategies V i , for cloud service provider i. The interpretation is that cloud service provider i prefers some resource pooling pattern strategy in V i to k i . The algorithm proceeds by successively adding Once-ina-Lifetime Workload preference limitations to the periodic static scaling.

Abstract:The rapid growth in cloud service demand has led to the establishment of large-scale virtualized data centers in which virtual machines (VMs) are used to handle user requests for service. A user's request cannot be completed if the VM fails. Replication mechanisms can be used to mitigate the impact of failures. Further, data centers consume a large amount of energy resulting in high operating costs and contributing to significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this paper, we focus on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud where user job requests are processed by VMs and analyze the effectiveness of VM replications in terms of job completion time performance as well as energy consumption. Three different schemes: cold, warm, and hot replications are considered. The trade-offs between job completion time and energy consumption in different replication schemes are characterized through comprehensive analytical models which capture VM state transitions and associated power consumption patterns. The effectiveness of replication schemes are demonstrated through experimental results. To verify the validity of the proposed analytical models, we extend the widely used cloud simulator CloudSim and compare the simulation results with analytical solutions.
