Reliability Analysis of Hybrid Energy System

Abstract: A hybrid energy system integrates renewable energy sources like wind, solar, microhydro and biomass, fossil fuel power generators such as diesel generators and energy storage. Hybrid energy system is an excellent option for providing electricity for remote and rural locations where access to grid is not feasible or economical. Reliability and cost-effectiveness are the two most important objectives when designing a hybrid energy system. One challenge is that the existing methods do not consider the time-varyin… Show more

“…The reliability of electrical power system refers to the capability of a power system to supply sufficient energy to a given load without any deficit or interruption in service. The most common indices of system reliability are LPSP [44], LOLP [17], LOLE, energy expected not served (EENS) and index of reliability )(IR [45]. These indices provide indications of load satisfaction.…”

“…LOLP is the probability of losing the power that supplies the load. LOLE is the number of days was the daily load is greater than the generation capacity of the system [17]. However, this study used monthly average data instead of hourly data.…”

“…There are many system's reliability indices. The most common ones are EENS and LPSP [45], Index of Reliability (IR) [46], LOLP [47], and Loss of Load Expectation (LOLE). These indices give an indication of how much the load is satisfied.…”

“…In the analysis, the authors consider the dependency and redundancy introduced due to the mutual conversion among different energy sources (e.g., thermal to electrical energy), and evaluate the reliability of supply in terms of the reliability characteristics of the existing conversions. Similar research on reliability and availability analysis of different types of energy systems and their hybrid forms could be found in (Collins et al, 2009;Tian and Seifi, 2014;Zhao et al, 2017). To assist with the optimization of the design and performance of energy systems, a method for thermoeconomic analysis of energy systems was presented in (Tsatsaronis, 1993).…”
