Relevance of SARS-CoV-2 related factors ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expressions in gastrointestinal tissue with pathogenesis of digestive symptoms, diabetes-associated mortality, and disease recurrence in COVID-19 patients

Abstract: IntroductionCOVID-19, is caused by a new strain of coronavirus called SARS-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is a positive sense single strand RNA virus. In humans, it binds to angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) with the help a structure on its surface called the S-spike. COVID-19 poses intriguing issues with imperative relevance to clinicians. The pathogenesis of GI symptoms, diabetes-associated mortality, and disease recurrence in COVID-19 are of particular relevance because they cannot be sufficiently e… Show more

“…To this effect, SARS‐CoV‐2 was recently shown to infect and replicate in enterocytes of human intestinal organoid (Lamers et al., 2020). Digestive symptoms are commonly observed in COVID‐19 patients indicating gut infection (Kumar et al, 2020; Wong, Lui, & Sung, 2020).…”

“…16,19,20 ACE2 expression levels correlate with higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. 9,21,22 ACE2, a membrane-bound metallopeptidase, is a master regulator of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). 23 SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 bind ACE2 on the cell surface.…”
