Release of Volatile Aldehydes by the Brown Algal Kelp Laminaria digitata in Response to Both Biotic and Abiotic Stress

Abstract: With a little kelp from my friends: In response to biotic and abiotic stress, the brown algal kelp Laminaria digitata releases volatile fatty acid aldehydes under laboratory conditions and in its natural environment (red). In response to 4-HHE treatment, L. digitata releases (13S)-HOTrE (green). These results support the hypothesis that these compounds may mediate kelp responses to stress.

“…lactuca resulted in signifi cant decrease in n -3 and n -6 PUFAs with a concomitant increase in SFAs (Kumar et al , 2011). Recently, the release of polyunsaturated aldehyde (PUA) class oxylipins such as (2E,4E)-octa-2,4,7-trienal and (2E,4E,7Z)-deca-2,4,7-trienal as signal molecules related to defence mechanisms in response to various biotic and abiotic stress conditions has also been addressed (Goulitquer et al , 2009). …”

“…Systemy would operate either externally (detection in the water column of an eliciting signal generated in a stressed region of the thallus by a naïve region of the same individual, followed by a defense response), or internally via translocation. It could involve halogenated compounds (VHOC) or oxygenated species (aldehydes) which are produced as defense compounds in plantlets of L. digitata which are metabolically challenged [79,80] and thus are possible pheromone-like candidates, along with known elicitors (alginate hydrolysates) of this particular kelp.…”

“…build-up of defense metabolites) or interplant conspecific elicitation [42]. Signal internalization (via COX-LOX enzymatic activation) and upregulation of defense-related genes may play a role in maintaining tissue-bound antibacterial defenses [14]. The rich repertoire of antibacterial or of biofilm-modulating responses of L. digitata has prompted us to investigate it as a model for the environment-friendly control of surface colonization by marine bacteria.…”
