Release of stored energy of X‐irradiated KCl and CsBr

Abstract: The energy release of KC1 and CsBr single crystals is measured after X-irradiation at 10 K. Release maxima are found a t 22, 28, and 36 K (KCI), and a t 24 K (CsBr). The energy release is correlated with the annealing of irradiation-induced Frenkel pairs by comparison with the results of optical absorption measurements. Below 50 K the release of stored energy is mainly due to the recombination of a + I Frenkel pairs. A value of 5 eV per recombination is found as an upper limit for the a + I Frenkel pair in KCI… Show more

“…The formation energies of F-H and α-I pairs with a system Fermi energy equal to the VBM are calculated as 6.4 eV and 5.2 eV, respectively. Experiment has observed the larger presence of α-I pairs over F-H pairs at liquid helium temperature, but finds this is no longer the case at higher temperatures [58,59]. Indeed this effect has been seen in the rocksalt alkali halides such as KBr [60].…”
