“…Nonetheless, it does possess a uniformly scattered population of large GABAergic neurons that are imported from the subpallium, and which appear to be local circuit neurons (Sakaguchi et al, 1987;Müller and Scheich, 1988;Braun et al, 1991;Csillag, 1991;Cobos et al, 2001aCobos et al, , 2001b. The present results also help clarify the nature of some of the subdivisions of the arcopallial-amygdaloid complex (formerly called the archistriatal complex).…”

“…There is, a priori, no reason to believe that seizures induced by metrazole, a GABA antagonist, should specifically spare the areas of low ZENK induction from physiological activation. There is clear evidence for the presence of GABAergic nerve terminals and somata in all layers of field L (Miiller, 1988) and in song nuclei (including the androgen receptor-containing nuclei; Arnold, 1992, 1994), and of GABA release following stimulation of the song circuit (Sakaguchi et al, 1987). Although it remains a formal possibility that these areas failed to experience significant net depolarization after metrazole, it seems much more likely that these particular neuronal populations simply do not express ZENK following electrical excitation.…”

“…In parasagittal slices of zebra finch brain loaded with tritiated GABA, the orthodromic activation of RA neurons, achieved by applying electrical stimuli dorsal to the nucleus, could evoke an increased release of this inhibitory transmitter (Sakaguchi et al, 1987). In contrast, electrical stimulation rostra1 to RA, which would be expected to activate RA's projection neurons antidromically and thus presumably the feedback inhibitory networks that they are part of, did not increase the amount of GABA released (Sakaguchi et al, 1987). The extremely fast nature of the GABA-mediated IPSPs could serve to sharpen the temporal response properties of RA neurons.…”
