Release behavior and toxicity profiles towards A549 cell lines of ciprofloxacin from its layered zinc hydroxide intercalation compound

Abstract: BackgroundLayered hydroxides salts (LHS), a layered inorganic compound is gaining attention in a wide range of applications, particularly due to its unique anion exchange properties. In this work, layered zinc hydroxide nitrate (LZH), a family member of LHS was intercalated with anionic ciprofloxacin (CFX), a broad spectrum antibiotic via ion exchange in a mixture solution of water:ethanol.ResultsPowder x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed th… Show more

“…The basic character of Z 5 HN could promote the formation of a polluting species, ZnCO 3 , after exposure of the sample to atmospheric conditions . Previous reported works have evidenced the capability of the anionic clays to capture CO 2 because of the high affinity between negative anions and positively charged layers as well as enhancement of the adsorption ability because of the presence of nitrate anions. , Values of CO 2 adsorption between 0.49 and 1.4 mmol g –1 have been reported by Sakr . This feature also could have affected the final composition of Z 5 HN synthesized in this study.…”

“…At 1705 and 1620 cm −1 the peaks are due to the stretching vibrations of the carbonyl group of carboxylic acid and ketone, respectively. The 1444 cm −1 peak is attributed to C–H bending or C–O, the 1271 cm −1 is due to C–C–C of ketone, and the 1045 cm −1 is due to C–F [ 27 , 29 31 ].…”

“…Layered zinc hydroxides are promising materials for application in anion exchange and can be synthesized by direct precipitation methods, through adding sodium hydroxide to aqueous solutions of zinc salts [11][12][13]. Therefore, layered zinc hydroxides are expected to function as ion exchange agents that can effectively remove P from wastewater [14][15][16].…”
