In recent years, cooperative communications have been widely used to improve the spectrum efficiency in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we propose a new cooperative model involving primary and secondary users, where a primary transmitter may select a number of the secondary users to act as relays in order to maximize its data rate and to transmit at lower energy level, thereby saving energy and reducing interference at the secondary base station. The cooperative transmission is a multiple two-hop relaying scheme, which guarantees an achievable data rate exceeding that in the direct transmission. In the proposed approach, the problem of joint relay selection and power allocation is formulated as a Stackelberg game, which converges to a unique optimal Nash equilibrium. Performance evaluation shows that this model offers benefit to both sides, where the primary users achieve higher data rate at lower energy consumption and the signal to interference plus noise ratio at the secondary base station is increased significantly. In addition, the results show that the proposed solution outperforms the investigated models in terms of achievable data rate.

SummaryRecently, cooperative communications are used to improve the communications performance in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we present a new model for implicit cooperation between primary users and secondary users (SUs), where SUs transparently relay packets of primary transmitters (PTs) towards their primary receivers encouraging PTs to reduce their transmit power, which in turn will reduce the total interference at some intended secondary receivers (SRs). Secondary relays work as full‐duplex amplify‐and‐forward (AF) cooperative nodes. The system is modeled as a multi‐armed restless bandit problem where the optimal policy for joint relay selection and transmit power allocation is obtained in a distributed way taking both instantaneous channel states and residual energy into consideration. We solve the problem using primal‐dual priority‐index heuristic, which can reduce the online computations and implementation complexity. Simulation results show that this model can benefit both sides where the energy consumption at PTs is reduced significantly and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) at the intended SUs is increased about 50% in average.

Cooperative Communications in Cognitive Radio (CR) have been introduced as an essential and efficient technique to improve the transmission performance of primary users and offer transmission opportunities for secondary users. In a typical multiuser Cooperative Communication in CR, each primary user can choose one secondary user as a relay node. To encourage the cooperative behavior of the secondary users, primary users lease a fraction of their allocated spectrum to the relay secondary users to transmit their data packets. In this work, a novel unselfish spectrum leasing scheme in CR networks is proposed that offers an energy-efficient solution minimizing the environmental impact of our network. A network management architecture is introduced, and resource allocation is proposed as a constrained sum energy efficiency maximization problem. The optimization problem is formulated and solved using non-linear programming methods and based on a modified Kuhn-Munkres bipartite matching algorithm. System simulations demonstrate an increment in the energy efficiency of the primary users’ network compared with previously proposed algorithms.
