Relay performance verification using fault event records

Abstract: Introduction: Event reports recorded by intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) such as digital relays and fault recorders during disturbances depict the status and system parameters of the power system. Incorrect relay settings and unknown system parameters can lead to relay misoperation but information regarding these are available by performing a comprehensive analysis of fault records. Hence, it is necessary to regularly make a comprehensive assessment of the functioning of the relay to ensure reliable opera… Show more

“…However, the fault resistance can also be estimated using the impedance-based algorithm in this case. Using the impedance-based technique described in [29] to calculate fault resistance for validation purpose, it was estimated as 4.09 Ω which verifies the fault resistance estimate from the ANN.…”

“…Transmission line parameters are critical information for various power system applications including fault location and classification [1][2][3], relay protection [4][5][6], and other applications [7,8]. Thus, the accuracy of line parameters is important, and accurate line parameter estimation methods are demanded.…”

“…By analyzing fault event reports, system operators can understand what happened during the event and the cause of the event but event reports contains much more valuable information. The authors in [1][2][3] have used event reports to glean information about relay misoperations and estimate a variety of system parameters.…”
