Relay intercropping of maize with common dry beans to rationalize nitrogen fertilizer

Abstract: Maize (Zea mays L.) and dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are important staple food and cash crops worldwide. Common bean in an intercrop with maize contributes to biological nitrogen fixation, which stabilize productivity of cropping systems and reduce negative environmental impacts and loss of biodiversity for sustainable agriculture. A field experiments was performed during the years of 2020 and 2021 at Sers El-Layian Station, northern Egypt. The current study aiming to study the effect of three sowing date… Show more

“…These findings are consistent with the maize-haricot bean intercrops that raised total soil N by 18 and 4% over the preplanting soil and sole maize, respectively [ 44 ]. Intercropping maize with common beans increased soil N content by 1.6% relative to maize monoculture [ 5 ]. Barley-pea intercropping also found to add on average 22 to 30 kg N ha −1 into the soil pools compared to the preplanting soil [ 46 ].…”

“…Among the major cereals, maize is considered next to rice and wheat. Maize cultivation is increasing day by day in India due to its stable market price and versatile usage such as food, feed and fodder and its wider adaptability under diverse agroclimatic conditions (El-Mehy et al, 2023;Zalac et al, 2023). Intercropping of pulses in cereals is an age-old practice to ensure diversity in the food-basket for smallholders.…”
