Relative Sensitivity of Core-Needle Biopsy and Incisional Biopsy in the Diagnosis of Musculoskeletal Sarcomas

Abstract: Background: There is no evidence as to the diagnostic value of the two most frequently used methods of biopsies in sarcomas: Incisional or core needle biopsy. The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity of the incisional and the core needle biopsy techniques in the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Methods: We included 417 patients with a definitive diagnosis of bone or soft tissue sarcoma in whom a total of 472 biopsies had been performed. We correlated the results of the biopsie… Show more

“…Moreover, six (54.5%) of the initial no-diagnoses were completed successfully with a second-line biopsy, increasing diagnostic accuracy to 96.2%. These results are consistent with recent research on this subject: in bone and soft tissue tumors, Yang et al achieved a diagnostic accuracy of 89% in 509 cases [11]; Klein et al observed 83.6% in their study [12].…”

“…The number of necessary re-biopsies with 0.6% it is to be highlighted here, since from our point of view these must also be evaluated as a complication. Klein et al showed in their study that the number of necessary rebiopsies was signi cantly higher in the case of CNB compared to IB (50 vs. 5; p = 0.003) (Klein, et al 2021).…”

“…The VBGM of care creates new incentives and is associated with a transformation of healthcare delivery, to create a novel ecosystem. A prerequisite for such transformation of healthcare delivery, however, is the assessment of absolute patient numbers and respective interventions [ 26 ]. We therefore speculate that such novel ecosystem of care delivery, together with measuring the outcome using RMST, may reduce the rate of unplanned whoops resections.…”
