Relative lens vault in subjects with angle closure

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to investigate the association of a novel biometric parameter, relative lens vault (LV), with primary angle-closure (PAC) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG).MethodsWe evaluated 101 subjects with PAC (G) and 101 normal subjects that were age- and gender-matched. Based on anterior-segment optical coherence tomography scans, and using customized software, the anterior vault (AV) and LV were measured. They were defined as the maximum distances between the horizontal l… Show more

“…In the present study, based on AS-OCT scans, we investigated two novel biometric parameters: the AV, which represents the sum of the LV and the ACD, and the rLV, which represents the ratio of the LV to the AV. 20 We found that AV was significantly associated with a reduction in IOP after cataract surgery in multivariate regression analysis. We did not find any significant association between LT, LV, or rLV and IOP reduction.…”

“…These two novel parameters are defined as the sum of the LV and the ACD and the ratio of the LV to the AV, respectively. 20 The purpose of the present study is to evaluate these novel lens parameters in nonglaucomatous eyes with NAs or OAs and their relation to IOP change after cataract surgery.…”

“…13 Meanwhile, AV is a novel parameter that represents the vertical dimension of the eyeball's anterior segment and could potentially predict the risk of a patient's angle closure. 15 Thus, our data showed that both vertical and horizontal dimension of the eyeball's anterior segment in the angle-closure eyes with longer AL were larger than those of angle-closure eyes with shorter AL. This might explain that the occurrence of PAC is evidently biased toward shorter AL.…”

“…A recent study demonstrated that although the healthy population had longer ALs than the PAC population, the relative dimensions of the eyeball's anterior segment (relative AV) in these two populations were quite similar. 15 Interestingly, our findings showed that the relative dimension of the eyeball's anterior segment (relative AV) was smaller in angle-closure patients with longer AL than those with shorter AL, suggesting that the anterior and posterior portions of the eyeball elongate disproportionately in angle-closure eyes with longer AL. Meanwhile, the RLP was smaller in angle-closure eyes with longer AL than in those with shorter AL, which reveals that the position of the lens is relatively more anterior in these atypical angle-closure eyes with longer AL.…”

“…After the scleral spurs are identified, the software calculated the iris, cornea, and lens parameters automatically. Table 1 shows the AS-OCT parameters and their definitions 12,17,[21][22][23][24][25] used in this study. After obtaining the images, APAC and phacomorphic angle closures eyes underwent LPI and cataract extraction, respectively, as part of their standard medical care.…”
