Evapotranspiration is a key point in many fields of science, such as geography, meteorology, hydrology, ecology and agronomy (Brutsaert, 1982). Reference evapotranspiration (ET o ) represents an integrated climate parameter that gives a measure of the evaporation demand of the air, and this knowledge is especially valuable for predicting crop water requirements (Doorenbos & Pruitt, 1977). ET o can be estimated by a wide range of methods that vary in data requirements. The FAO-56 version of the PenmanMonteith (PM) method was established as a standard for calculating ET o (Allen et al., 1998) AbstractThis study employs a methodological approach for estimating long-term series of monthly reference evapotranspiration (ET o ) from historical data. To carry it out a regionally calibrated version of the Hargreaves equation was applied at old ordinary weather stations which only provide data of air temperature and precipitation. The proposed approach was based on the analysis of: (1) the Hargreaves coefficient obtained by local calibration from data of 66 modern automatic weather stations; (2) the regional characterization of the spatial variability of that coefficient by means of a "regional function"; and (3) the final application of this function to the old ordinary weather stations. This approach was assessed under the semiarid conditions of the Segura River Basin (south-eastern Spain) by comparing ET o estimates against those obtained with the Penman-Monteith method, which was used as reference. Spatial variability of the Hargreaves coefficient was well correlated with the annual and monthly means of daily temperature range, so they were selected as explanatory variables for the regionalization of the Hargreaves coefficient following two approaches: a global regional function and monthly regional functions. The regionally calibrated version of the Hargreaves equation by monthly functions clearly improved the performance of its original parameterization (average relative error decreased from 19.8% to 10.1%) although, as expected, estimates were not as good as those obtained with the local calibration (average relative error = 7.7%).Additional key words: monthly evapotranspiration; Hargreaves coefficient; regional function, climate change; semi-arid climate.

ResumenEl modelo de Hargreaves (HG) para estimar evapotranspiración de referencia (ET o ) es una alternativa interesante a la ecuación de Penman Monteith (PM), propuesta como método estándar por la FAO, pero que no es aplicable en muchas situaciones porque requiere muchas variables climáticas que no suelen estar disponibles o cuyos valores medidos no son fiables. Para la aplicación de esta ecuación se recomienda una calibración local preliminar del llamado coeficiente de Hargreaves (AHC). Sin embargo, la obtención de valores concretos de AHC tiene un uso limitado, dado que se requieren valores locales de PM, que se aplicará realmente para determinar la ET o de la estación. Asimismo los valores de AHC no pueden extrapolarse. Por ello es preciso proponer y estudiar modelos para estimar el AHC, dado que en las condiciones en las que la ecuación de HG pretende ser útil no habrá posibilidad de calibración previa mediante valores de PM.Este estudio analiza si están justificadas las parametrizaciones mensuales o estacionales del AHC. Para ello se compararon tres escalas temporales en el desarrollo de los modelos de AHC: la anual, la mensual y la estacional. Los resultados sugieren que el desarrollo de modelos mensuales podría reducir el error relativo alrededor del 2% para AHC diarios y alrededor de 1% para AHC medios mensuales, es decir, un único modelo anual de AHC podría ser insuficiente para recoger toda la variabilidad anual de AHC. Por ello, la aplicación de modelos mensuales (o estacionales) podría estar justificado para una correcta estimación de los AHC. Asimismo, los resultados muestran que la estimación mensual del AHC fue más ajustada de mayo a septiembre que de octubre a abril, y, particularmente, que de noviembre a enero. 1-IntroducciónLa estimación precisa de la evapotranspiración (ET) puede contribuir a mejorar el diseño y gestión de instalaciones de riego. La ET es un parámetro crucial del ciclo hidrológico en agricultura, particularmente en sistemas de regadío. Jensen (1968) introdujo la metodología ampliamente extendida de estimar la ET como el producto de la evapotranspiración de referencia (ET o ), i.e. la ET de una superficie de referencia, y un coeficiente de cultivo, representativo de prácticas culturales, tipo de cultivo y desarrollo del mismo.

Afforestation and reforestation activities achieve high attention at the policy agenda as measures for carbon sequestration in order to mitigate climate change. The ThreeNorth Shelter Forest Program, the largest ecological afforestation program worldwide, was launched in 1978 and will last until 2050 in the Three-North regions (accounting for 42.4 % of China's territory). Shelter forests of the Three-North Shelter Forest Program have exhibited severe decline after planting in 1978 due to lack of detailed climatic classification. Besides, a comprehensive assessment of climate adaptation for the current shelter forests was lacking. In this study, the aridity index determined by precipitation and reference evapotranspiration was employed to classify climatic zones for the afforestation program. The precipitation and reference evapotranspiration with 1-km resolution were estimated based on data from the tropical rainfall measuring mission and moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer, respectively. Then, the detailed climatic classification for the afforestation program was obtained based on the relationship between the different vegetation types and the aridity index. The shelter forests in 2008 were derived from Landsat TM in the Three-North regions. In addition, climatic zones and shelter forests were corrected by comparing with natural vegetation map and field surveys. By overlaying the shelter forests on the climatic zones, we found that 16.30 % coniferous forests, 8.21 % broadleaved forests, 2.03 % mixed conifer-broadleaved forests, and 10.86 % shrubs were not in strict accordance with the climate conditions. These results open new perspectives for potential use of remote sensing techniques for afforestation management.
