Relative abundance and status of water birds in Taungthaman lake, Mandalay, Myanmar

Abstract: Relative abundance and status of bird species were studied in Taungthaman Lake, during January 2016 to December 2016. Line transect count method was carried out. A total of 27 species, distributed under 20 genera, representing 12 families and 5 orders were observed. The largest number of species was recorded in November and the lowest in August and the largest number of individuals was found in January and the lowest in July. Relative abundance indicated that seven species were found as very common (vC), only … Show more

“…On the other hand, birds are one of the biological indicators for the health of ecosystems (Simon et al., 2016). They are sensitive indicators of the health of ecosystems as they respond to secondary changes resulting from primary causes (Collins & Edward, 2014; Lwin et al., 2018; Rajpar & Zakaria, 2011). In this regard, the overabundance of terrestrial birds in these wetland habitats can be an indication of the fact that these areas are drying out.…”

“…The studied wetlands support a total of 1,130 individuals of birds belonging to species and 28 families in both wet and dry seasons. Due to differences in resource availability for feeding, nesting and roosting across seasons (Lwin et al, 2018;Odewumi et al, 2017), there was a difference in species richness and diversity in the studied wetlands in wet versus dry seasons. A higher species richness (51 species) and diversity (H = 3.65; D = 0.96) were recorded in the wet season while only 40 species were observed during the dry season (H = 3.37; D = 0.95).…”

“…Transect 1 (TR 1) is placed on the road that separates agricultural land and swamps, and transect 2 (TR 2) on the road separating residential and plantation areas. Observations were made in the morning from 06.00-09.00 and afternoon from 15.00-18.00 (Asrianny et al 2018;Lwin 2018;Iswandaru et al 2020a;Ramadhani et al 2022). Observers strolled along the transect, and each encounter recorded the type of bird observed (Sabo et al 2022).…”
