Relationships of ABO and Rhesus blood groups with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Objectives The susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been linked to blood type. We aimed to characterize the relationships of the ABO and Rhesus blood groups with T2DM. Methods Literature searches were performed using the Medline, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases to identify studies published up to 31 March 2022. The PRISMA guidelines were used for reporting. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained using fixed-effects models. Resu… Show more

“…This observation is consistent with the general population in which blood group O is associated with a lower risk of diabetes mellitus; on the other hand, patients with blood group B were at higher risk for diabetes mellitus. 11 Median follow-up was 8.8 years (0.1-46.9 years). There were 45 (14%) documented venous thrombotic events at or prior to ET diagnosis and 40 (12%) after diagnosis; the corresponding figures for arterial events were 55 (17%) and 67 (20%).…”

“…There were no additional eligible articles found by hand-checking the reference lists of all systematic reviews. Overall, 51 systematic reviews with meta-analyses corresponded to 270 unique associations were included [ 7 , 9 , 11 , 12 , 31 33 , 35 78 ] (Fig. 1 ).…”

“…A total of ten pregnancy related diseases and complications were selected as outcomes for this study, including venous complications and hemorrhoids in pregnancy, gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, infections of genitourinary tract in pregnancy, gestational oedema and proteinuria without hypertension, preterm labor and delivery, spontaneous abortion, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and other outcomes related to childbirth(Table S5). Type 2 diabetes (T2D) was selected as a positive control outcome since its association with protein level of ABO has already been confirmed (Table S6) [41]. To avoid sample overlap with pQTL GWAS, we obtained GWAS summary statistics (including estimates of regression coefficient, the corresponding standard error and P value, effect allele, other allele, and effect allele frequency) for all the outcomes from FinnGen [19].…”
