Relationships governing the construction of equilibrium diagrams of rem-(Si, Ge) binary systems and thermodynamics of alloy formation

Abstract: Having unique electrophysical, chemical and other valuable properties, silicides and germanides of rare-earth metals (REM) and also alloys containing them represent a basis of materials promising for industrial application.Over a number of years, the Institute of Materials Science of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences has been carrying out under the supervision of academician V. N. Eremenko systematic investigations of phase equilibria and also of the thermodynamic properties of alloys of rare-earth metals with… Show more

“…In a number of cases, for the description of speci®c properties, instead of the atomic number, different coordinates were used. The melting temperature of the rare earth was for instance used by Buyanov et al [47] in graphs such as that reported in Fig. 2 based on Eremenko's suggestions.…”

“…Although Yb tetrelides show attracting potentialities as magnetic materials in view of the mixed valence character of several phases , or as contact materials in Si/Ge-wafer-based microelectronic devices, the information on phase equilibria, crystal chemistry, and thermodynamic properties of intermediate phases is far from being satisfactory . Grytsiv et al studied the phase relations of the Si(Ge)-rich parts of the systems Yb−Si and Yb−Ge reporting the structure and physical properties of Yb 3 Si 5 and Yb 3 Ge 5 while Palenzona et al and Pani and Palenzona determined the Yb−Si and Yb−Ge phase diagrams in the whole composition range.…”
