Relationships between the allozyme and phenotypic diversities of Picea ajanensis populations

Abstract

The structures of Picea a�anensis �o�ulations were com�ared based on allozyme analysis of vegetative buds and mor�hometric analysis of generative organs. Six ceno�o�ulations of P. a�anensis were investigated in areas with various levels of volcanic im�act in the Kamchat�a Peninsula. The genetic structures of s�ruce �o�ulations and �henoty�es were determined by analysis of ten enzyme systems (PGM�� GOT�� HK�� LAP�� MDH�� SKDH�� IDH�� GDH�� PGI and SOD�. Phenoty�ic variability of s�ruce �o�ulations was estimated based on the com�osition of mor�hoty�es that were identified by using geometric mor�hometrics of cone-scale sha�es. Pairwise com�arison of sam�les of cones from 1�0 trees from six �o�ulations revealed 12 mor�hoty�es differing in the sha�e of cone scales. com�arative assessment of variability and similarity of �o�ulations was carried out based on the frequency of occurrence of �henoty�es and frequency of alleles of �olymor�hic loci. correlations of the genetic and �henoty�ic distance matrices between different �henoty�es were revealed. This observation was consistent with the genetic determination of the sha�e of cone scales in s�ruce. Genetic differences between the mor�hoty�es with regard to nine �olymor�hic loci (Got-2�� Skdh-1�� Idh-2�� Pgm-2�� Mdh-1�� Mdh-3�� Pgm-1�� Pgi-2�� and Hk� were not significant. Statistically significant differences between the mor�hoty�es were revealed for two loci�� Pgm-2 and Mdh-1. Differences in the genetic diversity of s�ruce �o�ulations generally corres�onded to differences in their �henoty�ic diversity.
