Relationships between place attachment, place satisfaction and pro-environmental behaviour in an Australian national park

Abstract: Place attachment is a multidimensional construct comprising place dependence, place affect, place identity, and place social bonding. Yet, studies investigating the relationships between place attachment, place satisfaction, and pro-environmental behaviour have not investigated its pluralistic nature. Using data from 452 visitors to the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Australia, this study investigates these four dimensions of place attachment and their relationships with place satisfaction and proenvironmenta… Show more

“…Yet nuanced analysis indicates that differences exist among these predictors: Those tourists, who believe that climate change is currently happening (i.e., Occurrence), are most likely to acknowledge energy saving and carbon reduction behavior norm and thus adopt related behaviors; while the belief that climate change is caused by humans (i.e., Anthropogenic Causation) has a very limited impact on perceived contribution of tourism to climate change, it can indirectly affect energy saving and carbon reduction behavior intention in tourism via norm; in general, while tourists are aware of climate change, there is limited awareness of tourism's contribution to climate change, which can hinder the adoption of energy saving and carbon reduction behavior in tourism as it positively impacts on both the norm and intention. Previous studies on pro-environment/destination behavior issues in tourism are often too focused on the tourism context itself, such as impacts/problems of tourism [15,56] or tourism experience [75][76][77], to explore the impacts of general environmental awareness on such behaviors. This study thus helps fill such a gap by linking perception of climate change in a global context to energy saving and carbon reduction behavior in tourism.…”

“…The question whether place attachment is best described by two, or more, components is still open [97]. In tourism, place attachment is also often described as "destination attachment" [94,96] and linked to visitors' loyalty to places [96], behavioural intentions [25] and pro-environmental behaviour [50,54,55]. In particular, Louriero [25] demonstrates a significant relationship between the tourism experience, place attachment, recommendation and tourists' intention to return in the context of rural areas.…”

“…Pro-environmental behaviour includes actions aimed at protecting the local environment and at facing environmental issues, such as giving time or money to site-specific best practices, or voluntarily visiting a destination less frequently or not at all when the area is recovering from environmental damage [53][54][55]. Environmentally friendly behaviour is related to personal attributes, environmental knowledge, and perception of environmental health.…”

“…It has been suggested that protected areas are very valuable settings in the study of attitudes towards the environment and conservation (Ramkissoon, Smith, & Weiler, 2013;Xu & Fox, 2014). Evident from the literature review, the communities are usually facing economic problems in remote areas although they have very rich natural attractions.…”
