Relationships between levels of lysozyme, lactoferrin, salivary peroxidase, and secretory immunoglobulin A in stimulated parotid saliva

Abstract: Recent studies suggest that salivary lysozyme (Lz), lactoferrin (Lf), peroxidase (Spx), and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) may interact in a common antimicrobial system. A multiple protein approach therefore may be needed to determine the role of this system in oral health and ecology. “…As a-amylase and SIgA are important for the protection of oral health, the aim of the study was to evaluate the secretion rate and concentration (SIgA) or activity (a-amylase) of these glycoproteins in whole saliva from spastic CP individuals. A report demonstrated that IgA concentration correlates positively with total protein concentration and negatively with salivary flow rate (23). As CP present a reduction of salivary flow rate and increased total protein concentration (7), the hypothesis of the study was to find an increase in the concentration and secretion rate of SIgA in CP individuals.…”
