Objective: Understanding and characterizing chronic pain in elderly caregivers, verifying the cognitive performance of the elderly of the sample and verifying whether there is difference in the cognitive performance of elderly caregivers with and without chronic pain. Method: Participants were people aged 60 years or older who lived with another elderly person in the same household and who were registered in Family Health Units. Data collection took place at participants' homes. Pain was assessed by the EMADOR and cognition was assessed by ACE-R. Statistical analyzes were performed using Shapiro-Wilk's and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: The study included 187 elderly caregivers with chronic pain and 133 without chronic pain, with a higher frequency of women. Chronic pain was present in 58.4% of the participants. Regarding the sociodemographic variables, there was no difference between the groups except for the gender variable (p=0.025). No difference was found in cognitive performance among the elderly with chronic pain and those without chronic pain for any domain of the ACE-R instrument. Conclusion: The results contradicted the initial hypothesis that there would be a difference between the groups; however, there is a gap in the scientific knowledge on chronic pain and cognition, especially in elderly caregivers, opening perspectives for future investigations.

Background/aim: Frailty is a complex, multifactorial, and important geriatric syndrome characterized by decline in physiological reserves and functional deficiency in multiple systems. The aim of the current study is to investigate the prevalence of frailty and to determine the correlation between quality of life (QoL) and falling risk in geriatric hospitalized patients.Materials and methods: A total of 420 patients, aged 65 years and above, were enrolled in the study. All participants were hospitalized at a university hospital in the internal medicine clinics. The Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) frailty scale, Health-Related Quality of Life Short Form (SF-36) scale, and Hendrich II Fall Risk Model were administered to the patients. Demographic data of patients, number of chronic diseases, and information on used medication were also collected. Results:The median age of patients was 71.9 ± 6.3 years and 49.5% of the patients were female. By applying the CHS frailty scale, the proportion of frail patients was determined to be 65.5%. There were statistically significant differences among quality of life mean scores of robust, prefrail, and frail patients (P < 0.001). Frail patients had the lowest scores in all SF-36 subgroups. Eighty-three (19.8%) patients were in the low-risk group while 337 (80.2%) were high-risk according to the Hendrich II Fall Risk Model. The rate of patients with high falling risk and poor QoL reached a maximum in the frail group (96%). Conclusion:Frailty is an important geriatric syndrome in elderly hospitalized patients. Poor QoL and high falling risk are issues commonly experienced with frailty.

RESUMOObjetivo: Analisar o conceito atribuído à qualidade de vida (QV) sob a ótica de idosos institucionalizados. Métodos: Estudo descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa, realizado com oito idosas de uma Instituição de Longa Permanência (ILP) no município de Fortaleza/CE, entre setembro e outubro de 2014. As informações foram coletadas por meio de entrevista semiestruturada em encontros individuais previamente agendados, e foram seguidas as etapas de Análise de Conteúdo para organização e análise dos depoimentos. Emergiram as seguintes categorias: percepção do idoso sobre a QV; comportamentos que favorecem a QV; e concepção do idoso sobre envelhecimento saudável. Resultados: Percebeu-se que qualidade de vida envolve vários fatores objetivos e subjetivos, como vida social, cultura, saúde física e psicológica, humor e trabalho, os quais têm sido fornecidos pela Instituição de Longa Permanência onde o estudo foi realizado. A ausência de doenças foi o contraponto marcante para o conceito de envelhecer de forma saudável. Conclusão: A autonomia e a capacidade funcional estão diretamente ligadas à obtenção da qualidade de vida e ao envelhecimento saudável. Assim, a equipe multiprofissional deve promover atividades direcionadas à manutenção da funcionalidade do idoso, com o intuito de prevenir ou protelar a incapacidade, limitações e dependência da pessoa idosa.
