Relationships between epipelic diatoms, aquatic macrophytes, and water quality in Akarçay Stream, Afyonkarahisar, Turkey

Abstract: The Akarçay is the most important stream in the Afyonkarahisar region in central Turkey. In this study, the relationships between epipelic diatoms, macrophytes, and the water quality of Akarçay Stream are presented. According to Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), BOD5, COD, TDS, NH4-N, NO2-N, and PO4-P had the most significant effects on the diatom and macrophyte community structures of the stream. According to CCA and Correspondence Analysis (CA), dominant diatom species and macrophytes constituted two … Show more

“…Our correlation analysis shows that the IBMR index depends not only on the nutrient parameters but also on other abiotic parameters such as water temperature (WT), electrical conductivity (EC), which explain the distribution of macrophytes more effectively than nitrate (NO 3 -N) and nitrite (NO 2 -N) in the upper Oum Er Rbia basin. Our results support other studies carried out in several countries (Demars et al 2012;Kargioglu et al 2012;Manera et al 2014;Özbay et al 2019). The results also showed a positive correlation between the IBMR values and nitrate (NO 3 -N).…”

“…The precipitation area of Akarçay Basin is 7605 km2 and the mean annual precipitation changes between 400 and 500 mm. The climate of the basin is continental type with a temperature of 20-25oC in summer and 0-3oC in winter (Anonymous 2013b; Kargıoğlu et al 2012).…”

“…Regarding the diatom studies which were carried out in Akarçay Basin, 107 epipelic diatoms were identified as a result of the sampling on a monthly basis from four points from March to December in 2008 in Akarçay River . Water quality was assessed according to epipelic diatoms and aquatic macrophytes which were sampled in the Akarçay River (Kargıoğlu et al 2012). The correlation between diatom indices and environmental variables were also examined .…”
