Relationships between egg size, chick size at hatching, and chick survival in the Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus

Abstract: The relationships between egg size, chick size at hatching a n d chick survival in Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus were studied over a three-year period in the Shetland Isles. Three measurements of 'chick size at hatching were all positively correlated with egg volume, though the relationship was strongest with hatchling body-weight. In two of the three years the proportion of chicks from a brood which survived to fledging increased significantly with the mean hatching weight of chicks in the brood. Within broods,… Show more

“…Because lead did not affect egg total mass, including yolk and albumen mass, it may not alter maternal investment in eggs, but may be maternally transferred into the eggs and affect embryonic development (Burger, ). Juveniles exposed to lead only ( lead group) tended to have a lower fledging success, possibly a consequence of a poorer condition at hatching (Grant, ). Among fledglings, lead exposure also induced a shorter growth period of body mass and tarsus and a smaller scaled mass index at 3 months of age, which could impair their future survival or reproduction (‘catch‐up' hypothesis, see Criscuolo et al ., ).…”

“…Also, in a study of two widely separated willow ptarmigan populations, nest survival, re-nesting potential and clutch size were all higher in one population, indicating little relationship between nest predation and renesting propensity for a congener in similar habitats Martin et al 2011). It is also possible that environments with high predation pressure, such as Colorado, select for larger eggs and thus larger chicks at hatch (Grant 1991;Blomqvist et al 1997). Additional studies across other populations that focused on the effects of predators as well as the influence of hypoxia, severe weather and nutrient limitation would be useful to examine this clutch size-egg size tradeoff further.…”
