Abstract: [Purpose] We assessed the upper body-raising ability of elderly persons, and compared it with their physical and psychological functions.[Subjects] The subjects were 475 community-dwelling elderly persons: 106 males, 369 females, average age 74.5  5.9.[Method] We compared 6 items of physical function, including muscle strength and walking ability, and 3 items of psychological function, including subjective health and purpose in life, and compared them between gender and ability to raise the upper body.[Resul… Show more

“…It can be inferred that grip strength of the old elderly group in this study was inferior to that of the young elderly group of both genders. Sit-ups as an index of muscle endurance are generally not measured in the elderly, considering the safety concerns related to the high difficulty of the test [25]. Muscle endurance and muscle strength decrease with age and are superior in males compared with those in females [26] [27].…”

“…Sit-ups have been suggested as an indicator of muscle endurance, which is known to decrease with age and muscle strength [14,15]. Murata et al [16] reported that subjects who cannot perform sit-ups were significantly inferior in sitting trunk flexion to those who can do it even in the healthy elderly. The present results demonstrated the same relationship between both tests.…”
