Relationships among the chemical, mechanical and geometrical properties of basalt fibers

Abstract: We investigated the chemical, mechanical and geometrical properties of basalt fibers from three different commercial manufacturers and compared the results with those from an industry standard glass fiber. The chemical composition of the fibers was investigated by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, which showed that basalt and glass fibers have a similar elemental composition, with the main difference being variations in the concentrations of primary elements. A significant correlation between the ceramic conten… Show more

“…The properties and chemical composition of basalt fiber are provided in Table 2. 15,[17][18][19][20][21][22] Marble dust or powder is a metamorphic rock, mainly composed of calcite (a crystalline form of calcium carbonate, CaCO 3 ) and other minerals, such as muscovite, sericite, and chlorite. The properties and chemical composition of marble dust particulates are listed in Table 3.…”

“…are very well eminent. The nature of basalt fiber and its properties are discussed in detail by Jamshaid and Mishra, 17 Ralph et al, 18 Dhand et al, 19 Bhat et al 20,21 and Dalinkevich et al 22 Demirel and Alyamac 23 pen-down the nature and properties of marble dust particulates. “…A series of relevant standards for basalt fiber and basalt fiber reinforced concrete were formulated in China, such as Shortcut basalt fiber for cement concrete and mortar, Basalt fiber classification and code, Highway engineering basalt fiber and its products (GB/T 23265-2009(GB/T 23265- , 2009Institute of Highway Science, 2010;GB/T 38111-2019GB/T 38111- , 2019. In addition, scholars conducted a lot of research on basalt fiber reinforced concrete, and studied the influence of adding fiber on the early shrinkage, early cracking, impact toughness, compressive strength, flexural and tensile strength, flexural strength and impermeability of concrete (Dong, 2011;He et al, 2012;Sun et al, 2022;Su, 2012;Hemalatha and Ramesh, 2019;Ralph et al, 2019;Alekseev and Kurilko, 2020;Hong et al, 2020;Khan et al, 2021;Li et al, 2022a). However, most studies only focus on a certain aspect of the performance of BFRC, which was not systematic and comprehensive.…”

“…Basalt fiber (BF) in asphalt mixture has also been compared with some common fiber modifiers [7][8][9][10][11]. For instance, BF has more superior mechanical property and durability than organic fibers and is also more eco-friendly than glass and steel fibers [12][13][14][15][16]. Morova [7] evaluated the influence of BF content on the pavement stability of asphalt mixture by the Marshall stability test, and 0.5% fiber content could significantly enhance the materials stability.…”
