Relationships Among Particle Number, Surface Area, and Respirable Mass Concentrations in Automotive Engine Manufacturing

Abstract: This study investigated the relationships between particle number, surface area, and respirable mass concentration measured simultaneously in a foundry and an automotive engine machining and assembly center. Aerosol concentrations were measured throughout each plant with a condensation particle counter for number concentration, a diffusion charger for active surface area concentration, and an optical particle counter for respirable mass concentration. At selected locations, particle size distributions were cha… Show more

“…The use of these two metrics simultaneously in occupational exposure assessments has only been done recently and in a small number of studies [35] but it seems of extreme importance because it gives more complete and accurate data to perform risk assessment [36].…”

“…The OPC data should be used to determine which portion of the CPC data is below the limit of the OPC (43). Heitbrink et al proposed a method to make that determination (19). Utilizing the fact that the detectable sizes for the two meters overlap, the size channels of the OPC that are below the 1000nm upper detection limit of the CPC are subtracted from the OPC's count.…”

“…The number 3 is the OPC channel for which the upper limit is 1000nm for the meter used by Heitbrink et al (19). As the lowest limit from the OPC's first channel is 300nm and the upper limit of the third channel is 1000nm, Nufp is solely the 20nm to 200nm particle count range (19; 55).…”
