Relationships among four genera of mojarras (Teleostei: Perciformes: Gerreidae) from the western Atlantic and their tentative placement among percomorph fishes

Abstract: A phylogenetic study of the percoid family Gerreidae at both lower and higher taxonomic levels is presented based on DNA sequence data of four genes: mitochondrial 12S and 16S, and nuclear genes rhodopsin and recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1). The taxonomic sampling includes four genera of Gerreidae from the western Atlantic, 39 additional percomorph representatives and two outgroups. Phylogenetic results confirm the monophyly of the Gerreidae and suggest that the family is divided into two sub-groups (Di… Show more

“…Consistent with this, both the Atlantic Gerreidae and Sciaenidae appear to be well separated on the basis of morphological and molecular analyses, but co-occurring in the same geographical area, i.e. Western Atlantic (Deckert and Greenfield 1987, Vinson et al 2004, Chen et al 2007 …”

“…They occur over muddy and sandy bottoms in estuaries, hypersaline lagoons and occasionally in fresh water in tropical and subtropical shallow coastal habitats (Matheson and McEachran, 1984;Chen et al, 2007). Fish in the family Gerreidae are also known for two swim bladder specializations.…”

“…The 16S sequences obtained for the three specimens (Fig. 3) present the same haplotype, which fits 100% with the sequence of C. regalis deposited in GenBank under the accession number AY857947 and also 100% with a shorter sequence of C. regalis (390 bp) deposited in GenBank under the accession number EF095595, obtained in the context of a phylogenetic study of the percoid family Gerreidae (Chen et al 2007). …”
