Relationship of the body mass index with skinfolds, girths, and bone breadths in canadian men and women aged 20–70 years

Abstract: The relationship of Quetelet index (w/h2), or body mass index (BMI), with the sum of skinfolds at five sites, two skinfold-corrected limb girths, and two bone breadths were studied in a cross-sectional sample of 12,282 men and 6,593 women aged 20-70 years. The correlations of the BMI with skinfolds (0.50), bone breadths (0.51), and girths (0.58) were too low for individual prediction. Contingency tables of the BMI and sum of skinfold categories further indict its use for the purpose of assessing adiposity stat… Show more

“…Correlation of BMI values with various measures of lean body mass is well known (Frisancho, 1984(Frisancho, , 1990Henneberg and Veitch, 2005;Ross et al, 1988;Ruff, 2002). This analysis shows consistent, significant and substantial covariances between directly measured adiposity (skinfolds) and separately measured dimensions of lean body frame; models that separate the body into fat and lean compartments do not consider such relationships (Nevill and Holder, 1995).…”

“…In addition it is also related to habitual physical activity (BROWN, 1977;SATWANTI et al, 1983;TREMBLAY, 1990;WATSON,1984). As a simple indicator of body composition, body mass index, as represented by weight/height2, has prevailed due to its validity (BILLEwICZ et al, 1962;EL-NOFELY, 1986;FLOREY, 1970;GARN and PESICK, 1982;KEYS et al, 1972;KHOSLA and LOWE,1967;MIcozzI et al, 1986;REVICKI and ISRAEL, 1986;ROSS et al 1988;SMALLEY et al, 1990;WOMERSLEY et al, 1976). However, the significance of the index is still not clear since body weight is composed of two main components: LBM and FM whose densities each show distinct differences.…”
