A comparative study on serum biochemical constituents was carried out in pregnant, estrus, anestrus and regular cyclic Jersey crossbred cattle. A total of 48 healthy Jersey crossbred cattle (n=48), aged 3-6 years with body condition score of 5-6 were selected and they were divided into four groups, each group comprised of twelve (n=12) animals (Group I: Pregnant, Group II: Estrus, Group III: Anestrus and Group IV: Regular cyclic). Experimental cows were properly vaccinated and dewormed as per the schedule of the farm. In morning, prior to concentrate feeding, the blood samples were collected in heparinized vacutainer and immediately transported to the laboratory. The blood samples were centrifuged at 3000 × g for 15 min. Serum samples were separated and kept at -20 °C until estimation of biochemical profiles. Concentration of serum total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose, total cholesterol was significantly (p<0.05) higher in pregnant as compared to anestrus animals which was recorded as the lowest among the four groups. Regular cyclic cows had non-significantly higher concentration of serum protein, glucose, total cholesterol and creatine as compared to anestrus cows. Similarly, concentration of serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine and liver functional enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase; AST, alanine aminotransferase; ALT and alkaline phosphatase; ALP) was higher in pregnant as compared to anestrus cows. However, anestrus animals were had nonsignificantly higher concentration of BUN and liver enzymes as compared to regular cyclic cows. Therefore, these findings implied that day 45-60 postpartum, blood glucose, total protein and BUN and total cholesterol have significant impact on the cyclicity of Jersey crossbred cows. Further research on mechanism of these metabolites on cyclicity of postpartum cow is required to confirm these findings.

Background: The postpartum period being a crucial on future performance and fertility, it should be monitored critically and evaluated. Therefore, the study was designed to investigate associations between the metabolic indicators during early postpartum period with uterine diseases and the subsequent effect on reproductive performance. Methods: The blood metabolites including non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), beta hydroxy butyrate (BHBA), cholesterol, total protein, blood glucose and calcium are studied at 1st and 2nd week postpartum (PP) in 50 Mehsana buffaloes. The difference and their association were seen in relation to postpartum diseases and reproductive performance. Result: The glucose concentration significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased in 2nd week compared to 1st week postpartum in Mehsana buffaloes with anoestrous ( greater than 75 days PP), longer service period ( greater than 125 days) and postpartum disorders (Within 125 days). The BHBA and NEFA did not differ significantly between the time points or between the buffaloes suffering from postpartum disorders or not. The early postpartum glucose level can be used as a predictive indicator for buffaloes suffering from anoestrus, longer service period and postpartum disorders.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of parity order (PO) and live body weight (LBW) on reproductive, calving and blood parameters of Maghrabi She-camels during post-partum period in Egypt. Post-partum 28 she-camels were divided according to LBW into four categories {400-430 (n=7), >430-460 (n=7), >460-500 (n=6) and >500-560 (n=8) kg}, and according to parity to 1 st -2 nd (n=8), 4 th (n=7) and 5 th -6 th (n=9). Results showed that number of estrus cases/animal, post-partum 1 st estrus interval (PPFEI) and cervical length increased by increasing LBW >500 kg (P≥0.05). Cervical closure time (P≥0.05) and uterine involution (P<0.05) increased by increasing LBW >430 kg. Uterine horn thickness, uterine length, cervical diameter and plasma progesterone and estrogen were not affected significantly by LBW. Estrus cases (n)/animal, cervical closure time and uterine involution increased in multi-parous than in primi-parous (P≥0.05), while cervical length increased at 5-6 parity compared with 1-4 parity (P≥0.05). The PPFEI, uterine horn thickness, uterine length, and progesterone and estrogen concentrations showed inconsistent changes in different parities (P≥0.05). Placental weight with or without fluids and calf weight at birth were not affected by weight or parity. Concentration of total proteins and their fraction as well as albumin/globulin ratio in blood plasma was not affected by weight. Glucose level reduced (P<0.05), ALP activity decreased (P≥0.05) by increasing weight. In conclusion parity and live body weight showed inconsistent trend of changes on reproductive performance, calving performance and blood biochemicals and hormonal concentrations during post-partum period of maghrabian she-camel under the Egyptian condition.
