Relationship of physical activity with physical function and health-related quality of life in patients having undergone allogeneic haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the differences in physical activity before and after transplantation, and the relationship between physical activity and physical function and health-related quality of life (QOL) in 30 patients who underwent allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Duration and intensity of physical activity were quantified using a three-dimensional accelerometer. Physical function was quantified by handgrip and knee-extensor strength, with the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) … Show more

“…Findings showed that liver transplant recipients had limited knowledge, if any, about post-LT self-care, particularly in areas such as nutrition, physical activity, medications, and symptom management. In line with this finding, previous studies showed lack of self-care knowledge about medications among liver transplant recipients (21), about physical activity among bone marrow transplant recipients (22), and about nutrition and transplant rejection symptoms among kidney transplant recipients (23). Moreover, we found that recipients gradually lost their interest in selfcare after LT due to experiencing improvements in their conditions.…”

“…The effects of AHCT on physical performance as measured by the 6MWT are not well-established. Whereas a significant reduction in 6MWT was reported acutely after allogeneic HCT [14,15], no change was reported after AHCT in a different report [16]. In other disease populations, change in 6MWT is clinically relevant.…”

“…Advancement in allo-HSCT conditioning regimens, treatments for opportunistic infectious complications, and management of graft versus host disease (GVHD) have improved the five-year net survival rate for blood-related cancers [ 1 ]. Unfortunately, allo-HSCT patients experience significant reductions in physical capacity as a result of pre-transplant conditioning regimens [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ] and post-transplant comorbidities [ 6 ] that are associated with reduced psychological wellbeing [ 7 , 8 ], survival [ 9 , 10 ], and short- and long-term health-related quality of life (HRQOL) [ 11 , 12 ]. Compounding this, physical capacity is further impacted by prolonged physical inactivity during hospital stays [ 13 ].…”
