Relationship of neuropsychological status to everyday functioning in healthy and chronically Ill persons

Abstract: Three hundred and three patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and concomitant neuropsychological impairment plus 99 healthy control subjects matched on the basis of socio-demographic variables were administered an expanded version of the Halstead-Reitan Battery and a battery of instruments measuring the quality of everyday-life functioning. The results indicated that neuropsychological measures can be used to predict everyday-life functioning in impaired persons, but few significant relationships… Show more

“…Bedard et al (1991) noticed that in subjects with OSA, a poorer performance in the Purdue Pegboard Test was associated with higher levels of apnea. McSweeney et al (1985) obtained similar findings among subjects with COPD using the FTT. However, results in this area are inconclusive (Grant et al, 1987;Stuss et al, 1997).…”

“…Similar findings of decreased quality of life associated with cognitive impairments are found in stroke patients (Kwa et al, 1996a(Kwa et al, , 1996b, in ICU survivors following multiple trauma (Thiagarajan & Miranda, 1995), following traumatic brain injury (Warren et al, 1996), HIV (Osowiecki et al, 2000), carbon monoxide poisoning , and COPD (McSweeny & Labuhn, 1996). For example impaired executive function significantly correlated with poor life functioning in COPD patients (McSweeny et al, 1985).…”

“…Except for Delayed Word Recall in men, these results held in the extended multivariable models which included control for smoking status. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has been associated with decrements in memory, psychomotor speed and verbal skills [44]; these decrements have also been found in clinic-based studies of persons with mild hypoxemia, with more extensive hypoxemia associated with more severe cognitive deficits [45][46][47].…”
