Relationship of Fibronectin and CD44v6 Expression with Invasive Growth and Metastasis of Liver Cancer

Abstract: Fibronectin and CD44v6 are involved in tumor invasion and metastasis. We examined fibronectin and CD44v6 expression in normal liver and liver cancer by immunohistochemistry. Fibronectin expression was identified in 37.5% of liver cancer specimens. Well-differentiated tumors and expansive growth were associated with continuous periacinar, or cytoplasmic and periacinar fibronectin expression; poorly differentiated and invasive tumors showed interrupted periacinar or vascular mesenchymal fibronectin expression. C… Show more

“…Collagen IV interacts with different cell surface receptors involved in various intracellular signaling pathways to promote tumor cell proliferation and migration as well as tumor angiogenesis [ 36 ]. FN, a potential diagnostic marker of liver cancer invasion and metastasis, participates in forming the cytoskeleton and in determining cell morphology [ 37 ]. LN and its related proteins play an important role in maintaining the normal function of the basement membrane, which is involved in cell growth, differentiation, migration, and adsorption [ 38 ].…”

“…Tumour cells with high expression of FN on the cell surface can enhance the adhesion of tumour cells to each other and the anchoring adhesion ability of cells to matrix and basal membrane without shedding and metastasis through the action of various adhesion molecules on the cell membrane surface. 15 We examined fibronectin expression in vector and ANKRD49 OE groups by immunohistochemistry (Figure 3D,E ). We found that ANKRD49 overexpression increased the immunoreactivities of FN.…”

“…In this way, CD44v6 has been described to negatively impact the prognosis of patients with multiple myeloma ( 19 ), colorectal cancer (CRC) ( 20 , 21 ), osteosarcoma ( 22 ), esophageal carcinoma ( 22 ), gastric cancer ( 23 ) as well as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) ( 24 , 25 ) patients, among others. Moreover, altered CD44v6 expression has been associated with tumor development, migration, invasion and metastatic potential in a broad variety of tumor types, such as HNSCC ( 24 ), oral cancer ( 26 ), laryngeal carcinoma ( 27 ), esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, gastric cancer ( 28 – 30 ), pancreatic cancer ( 11 , 31 ), liver cancer ( 32 , 33 ), CRC ( 34 ), lung cancer ( 35 , 36 ), breast carcinoma ( 37 ) and gynecologic malignancies ( 38 ) such as ovarian ( 39 , 40 ) and prostate cancer ( 41 ), among others ( Figure 1 ).…”
