Relationship between Ulcerative Colitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Review

Abstract: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a colonic disease characterized by chronic inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a rheumatological chronic inflammatory disease characterized by joint swelling and tenderness. It is also considered an autoimmune disorder. We want to discover if a link exists between UC and RA and if so, how UC affects the progress of arthritis. We used PRISMA guidelines. In this study, we used PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), and Google Scholar to collect data. Studies conducted more than 50 years … Show more

“…Although primary sclerosing cholangitis also was correlated significantly with depression, we did not observe such a relationship with celiac disease and rheumatoid arthritis, despite these traits being pathologically related to IBD. 21 , 22

“…Interestingly, there is a strong positive relationship between the inflammatory conditions of colitis and rheumatoid arthritis (Attalla et al, 2019[ 2 ]). Accordingly, the drug sulfasalazine is a standard drug for both of these inflammatory conditions (Attalla et al, 2019[ 2 ]), for which hydrogen has also been shown to be effective.…”

Accordingly, the drug sulfasalazine is a standard drug for both of these inflammatory conditions (Attalla et al, 2019[ 2 ]), for which hydrogen has also been shown to be effective. For example, in small clinical studies, treatment with molecular hydrogen has shown pronounced therapeutic effects in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (Ishibashi et al, 2012[ 10 ], 2014[ 11 ]).…”

“…Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP)-coated SeNPs also showed anti-inflammation effects through the inhibition of NF-κB-mediated hyperinflammation in murine acute colitis models [ 155 ]. Given that ulcerative colitis (UC) and RA have a notable correlation [ 156 ], it can be proposed that ULP-SeNPs can be a potential therapeutic or combinational alternative for UC and RA remedial regimens. The results of the studies discussed above are shown in Table 4 .…”
