Relationship between thymus ontogeny and DNA ligase expression in the chicken

Abstract: DNA ligase expression was studied in the embryonic chicken thymus. As previously reported, during thymus ontogeny two separate and successive (8S and 6S) forms of enzyme are found. The switch from the heavy to the light form takes place at around 18 days of incubation in situ. The demonstration that two successive generations of thymic lymphoid precursor cells develop in the embryonic bird thymus and that the replacement of the first by the second thymocyte generation takes place at around 18 days suggested th… Show more

“…Expression of this enzyme correlates with an altered incidence of N insertion in coding joints (Landau et al 1987) of neonatal versus adult mouse lymphocytes (Lafaille et al 1989;Feeney 1990;Gu et al 1990). It is also of note that two distinct ligase activities are sequentially expressed in successive developmental waves of avian thymocytes (Jotereau et al 1987), although it is not clear whether this has significance for VDJ recombination.…”
