Relationship Between the Lymphatic Drainage of the Breast and the Upper Extremity: A Postmortem Study

Abstract: Lymphatic drainage of the UE and breast are closely related in the caudal part of the axilla. SN groups for the UE and breast share connections in 24% of cases, which could explain lymphedema after surgery if damaged. Additional studies are needed to further improve our understanding of the lymphatic drainage of the UE and breast.

“…This may have increased the number of identified ARM nodes and the concordance rate between ARM nodes and SLNs. These results were consistent with the observation of a previous postmortem study; in which Pavlista et al 35 reported that ARM nodes and SLN share connections in 24% of cases. It was also found that while the breast is preferentially drained to one SLN of relatively constant localization, the arm has several ARM nodes that depend on the number and course of collectors.…”

“…It was also found that while the breast is preferentially drained to one SLN of relatively constant localization, the arm has several ARM nodes that depend on the number and course of collectors. 32,35 Involvement in ARM nodes As mentioned above, it has been hypothesized that the lymphatic pathway from the arm is not involved by metastases. 7 In initial studies, the ARM nodes were not involved by metastases even when many axillary nodes were positive.…”

“…While breast lymphedema usually develops as a result of breast cancer treatment, it can occur after any intervention in the axilla. Indeed, axillary lymph node removal may disrupt not only the lymphatic drainage in the upper arm but sometimes also in the breast, due to the known drainage connections in the axillary apex (Pavlista & Eliska, ). On the other hand, it has also been shown by Suami () that not all thoracic lymph vessels cross the breast to connect to axillary lymph nodes (Suami, ).…”
