Relationship Between the Blue‐Green Alga Trichodesmium Thiebautii and the Copepod Macrosetella Gracilis in the Plankton off Northeastern South America

Abstract: A strong correlation between the abundance of the blue—green alga Trichodesmium thiebautii and the abundance of the harpacticoid copepod Macrosetella gracilis is reported at 34 stations off the northeastern coast of South America. This field observation supports previous laboratory observations that filaments of Trichodesmium are required as a substratum for the development of M. gracilis.

“…The abundance data for adult Macrosetella gracilis in the Red Sea can be compared with those from other fine mesh net sampling programs (c 0.1 mm mesh size) in the southern Atlantic Ocean (Calef & Grice 1966), the Caribbean Sea (Roman 1978) and the Sargasso Sea (own unpubl. data).…”

“…A positive correlation between Trichodesmium spp. and M. gracilis abundances was also found in the Red Sea (Calef & Grice 1966, Böttger-Schnack & Schnack 1989, Böttger-Schnack 1991. However, no abundance data appears to be available for the North Pacific Gyre.…”

“…The relative abundance of M. gracilis among tropical copepods is poorly known, although Böttger-Schnack & Schnack (1989) estimated that M. gracilis comprises 1 to 3% of adult tropical copepods in the Red Sea. Calef & Grice (1966) showed that M. gracilis abundance in the western tropical Atlantic closely tracked Trichodesmium spp. abundance, and they found no M. gracilis in the absence of Trichodesmium spp.…”
