Relationship Between the 137Cs Whole-Body Counting Results and Soil and Food Contamination in Farms Near Chernobyl

Abstract: We measured the radioactivity in the soil and child food samples from farms near Mogilev (56-270 GBq km(-2) 137Cs), Gomel (36-810 GBq km(-2) 137Cs), and Klincy (59-270 GBq km(-2) 137Cs), who had whole-body 137Cs counting results measured as part of a health examination in the Chernobyl Sasakawa Health and Medical Cooperation Project. Soil contamination on the family farm seems to be the main source of human contamination because most of the people in the area live on small farms and they and their domestic ani… Show more

“…Takatsuji et al . measured the radioactivity in soil and child food samples from farms near Klincy in Russia (59–270 GBq km -2 137 Cs), Mogilev (56–270 gBqkm -2 137 Cs) and Gomel (36–810 GBq km -2 137 Cs) in Belarus [ 5 ]. They found that there was a significant correlation between the 137 Cs body burden and soil radioactivity, and also the average contamination level of their current residence.…”

“…Paying more attention to the place of origin of foods, especially of vegetables and rice, significantly reduced contamination risk. Previous studies have also shown that contaminated groundwater, fruits, vegetables, and milk are the important risk factors for internal contamination (Hatch et al 2005; Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare 2011a; Muck 1997; Napier 2012; Smith et al 2000; Takatsuji et al 2000). Mushrooms are also an important food product to consider, because they can accumulate a large amount of radionuclides through their slow decontamination process (Kalac 2001).…”

“…Physical effects from radiation exposure were issues in past radiation accidents such as Chernobyl, including psychological and social effects like clinical depression and anxiety disorders [ 6 ]. Following the Chernobyl disaster, humans and domestic animals close to the nuclear plant were diagnosed with high internal radiation exposure resulting from ingestion of crops grown in radiocesium-contaminated soil [ 7 ]. Even 30 years after the disaster, wild mushrooms from Chernobyl still contained a high concentration of radiocesium, reflecting long-term environmental damage [ 8 ].…”
