Relationship between Sterility and Seedlessness in Citrus.

Abstract: SummaryThe relationship of female and male sterility, and self-incompatibility to seed content in citrus were investigated using 22 male sterile and fertile cultivars. The male fertile cultivars were grouped into self-compatible and self-incompatible. Positive correlation (r = 0.927**, r2=0.859) existed between the average number of seeds per fruit obtained by hand pollination, which indicated the degree of female fertility, and that yielded by open pollination. This result indicates that the degree of female … Show more

“…Seedlessness in citrus mandarin cultivars can be induced by many factors, and many seedless citrus cultivars have been originated from the bud mutation of seedy cultivars (Yamamoto et al, 1995;Shen, 1997;Vardi et al, 2008). Great achievements have been made over the past few decades in seedless breeding techniques with fruits such as citrus, grape (Vitis vinifera L.), litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.…”

“…In citrus fruit, the failure of the sexual reproductive process (e.g., male sterility) in parthenocarpic cultivars results in seedless fruits (Yamamoto, Matsumoto, & Yamada, ). In contrast to other fruit crops, male sterility can be considered a benefit to avoid the presence of seeds, which is one of the most important quality traits for fresh citrus fruit consumption.…”

“…Therefore, the development of seedless fruit cultivars has become a major goal for fruit breeders around the world and different approaches have been adopted by numerous researchers (Raza et. al., 2003, andYamamoto et. al., 1995) Citrus fruits are used for dessert, juice and jam production as well as they have important economic value for their essential oils (Fisher and Phillips, 2008;Anwar, 2008).…”
