“…Cigarette smoking leads to deterioration of the periodontal condition in Japanese adults by analyses of the same databases used in the present study, though the effect would be underestimated due to the low power in detecting periodontal destruction. 32 Though the study population was derived from national databases, the results in terms of prevalence and distribution may not represent the national status. The source of the surveyed population in the NNS was based on the household.…”

“…This disparity may be due to differences in bacterial burden or the severity of periodontitis between genders. Epidemiological surveys showed a higher prevalence and greater extent of attachment loss (a clinical characteristic of periodontitis) in males than in females 30) . Clinical records of periodontitis were unavailable for evaluation in this study; however, the lower antibody titers in women in our study population may reflect the extent of severity of periodontitis.…”

“…Periodontitis is a common chronic dental disease worldwide, and based on a national survey, it is present in 42.5% of Japanese citizens (1,2). The onset of this disease results from bacterial plaque accumulation that elicits an inflammatory cascade, leading to leukocyte infiltration, connective tissue destruction, pocket formation, and alveolar bone resorption (3)(4)(5).…”
