Relationship between sleep bruxism and sleep respiratory events in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Abstract: We found that patients with OSAS have a high risk of SB. In particular, this is the first report relating phasic-type SB to obstructive apnea events. This relationship suggests that improvement in OSAS might prevent exacerbations of SB.

“…Some patients report concomitant complaints related to sleep bruxism (SB) and obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAH) [1][2][3][4][5][6]. However, the strength and specificity of this association during sleep remain debated in the literature.…”

“…For example, the use of different methods to assess SB presence (e.g., questionnaire alone vs. advanced sleep recording and scoring methods) is probably a major cause of discrepancy [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. A recent sleep laboratory study in a large general population sample with wide age range failed to show any strong correlations between sleep breathing variables and SB [11].…”

“…36 The prevalence was higher in patients with OSAS, and the risk of SB in OSAS patients had a value of 3.95 (IC 95% 1.03-15.20; p < 0.05). Interestingly, the frequency of phasic contraction of masseter muscles had a positive correlation with OSAS, arousals, and oxygen desaturation.…”

“…Eventos respiratórios também ocorreram mais frequentemente em pacientes com BS. A frequência de episódios fásicos de BS correlacionou-se positivamente com episódios respiratórios, e os episódios de BS relacionados a microdespertares foram mais frequentes em pacientes com AOS 35 . Em um estudo, com o objetivo de avaliar a distribuição de sintomatologia mandibular subjetiva relatada em pacientes com AOS, Kato et al 36 (2013) observaram uma relação negativa dos sintomas com o IAH.…”
